EBook Formatting And Publishing

T0 ALL SELF-PUBLISHED AUTHORS

To self-published your eBook means: you write your eBook by yourself, format it by yourself, and upload it unto an eBook publishing website by yourself.

Generally, eBook publishing involves 5 stages of activities:

1. Writing of the eBook to be published.
2. Formatting of the eBook to be published.
3. Uploading of the formatted eBook to an eBook Publishing website.
4. Marketing and selling your published eBook.
5. Getting Royalty from your sold eBook.

These are the 5 stages of eBook publishing that I have found after I have self-published 5 eBooks myself on the World 2 leading eBook publishing companies: Amazon.com and Smashwords.com

All these stages can be outsourced except Stage 5: [Getting Royalty from your sold eBook]. I haven’t heard yet of any author who outsource his Royalty collection services to a professional eBook Royalty Collector. So what a self-published author tries to accomplish, is to a large extent, to be able to carry out these 5 stages of eBook publishing by himself or by herself, with little or no outsourcing of any of the stages. [Although as a self published author, you can outsoure some stages.]

In this eBook, we are interested in 2 out of the 5 stages of eBook publishing:

STAGE 2: Formatting of the eBook to be published.

STAGE 3: Uploading of the formatted eBook to an eBook Publishing website.

Because we assumed you have already done Stage 1. [Writing of the eBook to be published.] Stage 4 [Marketing and selling your published eBook.] and Stage 5 [Getting Royalty from your sold eBook.] will only be possible when stage 2 and 3 are done.

STEP #1

CREATE A FOLDER TO KEEP YOUR EBOOK PROJECT FILES

Your eBook work is a project. And it should be treated so. Create a FOLDER [a Directory] where all your eBook document files will be kept. This is good because:

1. It makes you to be organized.

2. You can easily backup all your book files into one place. E.g. Flash, External Hard Disk or Online Cloud Storage Drive.

3. Accessing and referencing your eBook project files will be easy to do.

This first recommended step in eBook formatting look inconsequential, but from experience, I have discovered it is even very essential.

A wise man once said: “Orderliness Enhances Progress.” He is correct.

TIP:

Create a folder name that is reflective. A folder name that tells of what your eBook work is all about.

For example:

• I am writing a book on eBook Formatting, so I created a folder named, EBOOKFORMATTING.

• I am writing a book titled: The Faithfulness of GOD, so I created a folder named, FaithfulGOD to holds my entire eBook document files.

I think you now understand why it is advisable and necessary to create a folder to hold all your eBook Project files.

STEP #2

DO A PROPER EBOOK LAYOUT ARRANGEMENT

Before you begin to do your Book Content Formatting, you must first of all follow standard eBook Layout Arrangement demanded by both Amazon.com and Smashwords.com. Though not enforced, but required.

There is a way your eBook needs to be arranged before you begin to do its Content Formatting.

Below is a good eBook Layout Arrangement which I have both followed and adhered to and used on both Amazon.com and Smashwords.com publishing platforms, and it works 100% without error.

Recommended Book Layout Arrangement is as follows:

1. Book Title.
2. Copyright.
3. Appreciation.
4. Dedication.
5. Table of Content.
6. Forward/Review.
7. About this book.
8. The Body of your book.
9. Book Review request.
10. Other book titles by the same author.
11. Your contacts: Facebook, Twitter, Website, Email address.

The above is how your eBook Layout should be arranged. It is not mandatory that you must provide all the above information in your eBook. I hardly do that myself. But there are some information that are mandatory.

PAGE 12

MANDATORY STEPS:

In every of your eBook, you must provide:

1. Book Title.
2. Copyright.
5. Table of Content.
8. The Body of your book. [Your book content]

In most of my eBooks, I always like to provide steps 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 11

The truth is that, your entire eBook content can be grouped into 3 groups of information:

1. Front Matter Area.
2. Body of Your Book [Your book content].
3. Back Matter Area.

[1.] FRONT MATTER AREA

Information that come first in your eBook, that tell readers about your eBook, who you are, legal issues, what your eBook contains, what people say about your book and other things.

1. Book Title.
2. Copyright.
3. Appreciation.
4. Dedication.
5. Table of Content.
6. Forward/Review.
7. About this book.

PAGE 13

All these information are to be in the Front Matter Area of your book, you provide as much as your book required or you want to provide, but

1. Book Title.
2. Copyright.
5. Table of Content.

Are mandatory to be there. Although I have read some eBooks that left out Table of Content. But that is not a good eBook Layout format. Your eBook must have a Clickable Table of Content.

[2.] BODY OF YOUR BOOK [YOUR BOOK CONTENT]

This is the core of the whole matter. The content of your book. Starting from Chapter 1 or Introduction to the Last Chapter or closing remark in your eBook.

8. The Body of your book or your Book Content.

This is not just mandatory, but compulsory, without which you don’t have a book to publish.

[3.] BACK END MATTER AREA

These are the last information, at the last pages of your document, after the main content of your eBook, that you want your reader to know about.

9. Book Review request.
10. Other Book Titles by the same author.
11. Your contacts: Facebook, Twitter, Website, Email Address.

All these are optional, but sometimes good to provide them if you have reason to do that. So make sure you re-arrange your Microsoft Word book work to meet up with the standard and recommended Book Layout arrangement. Do this before you move to step 3.

Step 2: is DONE. Go to Step 3.

STEP #3

OPEN YOUR EBOOK DOCUMENT IN MICROSOFT WORD AND RE-SAVE IT AS A PLAIN TEXT FILE

To have a good eBook Formatting, it is not always advisable to format your just typed eBook content straight. You can do that if you want to, but it is not advisable, and I tell you from personal experience, you have a greater tendency to mix things up and your eBook will be rejected during UPLOADING and PUBLISHING time. I have experience that before.[As you will discover this in SECTION 3 of this book. SECTION 3 in this book is where you will be taught how to upload your formatted Microsoft Word book work into Amazon KDP publishing platform].

So it is recommended by Smashwords.com for you to first of all save your completed eBook document that you have proofread and edited in Microsoft Word, as a PLAIN TEXT document. Then you define a New Microsoft Word Document Style Setting for your eBook. Then copy your eBook PLAIN TEXT document and paste it into this New defined Microsoft Word document Styled screen.

This is a demanding and tedious work to do. Yes, it is. But it is better done now, than having Amazon.com rejecting your eBook upload 3 times in a row. Take pain to do the right thing now, to have peace of mind latter.

So here, you will Re-Save your completed, proofread, edited and formatted-your-own-way eBook, as PLAIN TEXT document.

TO DO THIS:

1. Open your eBook that you have typed and proofread and edited, in Microsoft Word [2007 or 2010 or 2013]. If you have not already done that.

2. Click File, Save As from Microsoft Word menu.

[In Microsoft Word 2007: Click Office Button, File, Save As.]

Microsoft Word Save As screen will be displayed.

3. Click Save As Type list button.

Save As Type list button will be displayed.

PAGE 15

4. Select Plain Text from the Save As option types. Like as shown below.

• Save This Plain Text Document Into Your eBook Folder:
• Don’t forget to save all your eBook documents into your eBook folder.

While your Microsoft Word Save As dialog box screen is still open,

5. Double click on Local Disk (C:).

PAGE 16

All the folders in your Local Disk (C:) drive will be displayed. Like as shown below.

6. Double click the Folder that you have created for your eBook files before.

In this example, EBOOKFORMATTING.

Immediately you do that, you will be taken inside your eBook folder, which is empty because you have not yet saved any file into it.

7. Click inside the Filename Textbox and Type your document filename there.

In this example, I am writing a book title EbookFormatting, so I save my eBook PLAIN TEXT file document as EbookFormatting TEXT FILE.

PAGE 17

8. Click Save button.

Microsoft Word will alert you that, all your formatting may be lost.

9. Click OK button on this screen.

You are back to your Microsoft Word eBook document.

PAGE 18

CONSEQUENCES OF WHAT YOU HAVE JUST DONE:

When you Re-Save your eBook Microsoft Word document as a PLAIN TEXT file, Microsoft Word will warn you that, all your previous formatting commands will be lost.

MEANING:

• All your previous formatting commands will be lost.
• All the pictures, if there are any, which you inserted into your eBook, will be lost.
• All your tables, if there are any, will be lost.
• All shapes, charts, media files, if there are any, will be lost.

Leave it that way as of now. You will reformat all of them back later. You will learn all that latter: how to properly insert Pictures, Tables and Charts into your eBook, that is, if your eBook requires that.

10. Click File, Exit [Or in Microsoft Word 2007, click Office button, Exit.]

If Microsoft Word requests to save your work, say No.

You are back to your Window Desktop [Window XP, 7, 8 or 10]

Step 3: is DONE. Go to Step 4.

STEP #4

DEFINE A NEW MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENT STYLES SETTING FOR YOUR EBOOK DOCUMENT

This is one of the most vital stages of eBook Formmatting for publishing on Amazon.com and Smashwords.com. Many eBooks failed at UPLOADING and PUBLISHING time, because of improper Word Document Styles setting or improper formatting. Some UPLOADED and PUBLISHED books appears very disorganize and poorly arranged, because of improper Word Document Style Settings and Formatting. So pay keen attention at this stage.

At this step or stage, you are going to define a New Microsoft Word Styles Setting for your eBook document. This is necessary because, improper or inconsistence uses of Styles is the reason behind why so many authors and writers eBooks are rejected by Amazon.com online eBook conversion software or Smashwords.com MeatGrinder software.

After you have defined a proper Microsoft Word Document Styles Setting for your eBook document, it thus becomes like a TEMPLATE for your eBook.

TO DO THIS:

1. Start your Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010 program again.

Your Microsoft Word screen will be displayed and blank and empty.

2.
